Hi everyone, happy Monday!!
In my last blog, I did a brief intro into SEO. You can click here to see what that was all about. Moving on to the next thing……..
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is based on ”natural” or “organic” results. They are the main bulk of the results on the page. You want your site to be ranked high on the organic search results even if you are advertising using paid search (by google adwords for example). Your aim should be to rank both high and broad ie for as many search terms as possible.
Google Search’s Golden Triangle
There have been eye-tracking study to show that the eyes only recognise the first 3 results at a 100 percent. 85% of people look at the fourth result, then 60%, then 50%, 50%, 30%, 30% and only about 20% go as far as the 10th result. You know what? Thinking about it, I definitely do the exact same thing. Only when I don’t find what I’m looking for in the first few results do I go down the page. Except of course, I’m looking for some kind of comparison. So, you really want to rank high on the google search.
The UK performs around 4billion searches in one month alone. Half of these searches are new searches because people are being more specific and searches are getting longer and more complex for example instead of searching for “women’s clothing”, people will now search for “cheap clothing” for “tall women” in “london” near “brick-lane”. So, back to the point of ranking broad, you want to make sure that your main products, services, location are mentioned somewhere on your site so that you’re listed on search engines. These items are keywords as I’m sure you very likely know.
Keywords
Now talking of Keywords, they are probably the most important factor when it comes to optimising your page. Unless maybe you’re using other media that doesn’t involve text content, in which case, you probably won’t need search engine optimisation. When it comes to SEO, the first thing to know with keywords is to keep your site content Keyword Dense. In order words, make sure that your chosen keywords are 5%-15% of your page’s total copy. In some cases, you can even go up to 20%. Don’t go overboard with it though as you could risk sounding repetitive to your visitors. And of course, you do not want to go and write a keyword 50times with white text on a white background 100 times and think that you are being smart as search engines like google disapprove this and your site could be penalised or worse, banned from google listings altogether. This is an example of black hat SEO that you should never try to mimic.
Another tip: Try using your keywords in the first and last sentences of your web pages.
Here’s where I’ll stop for today. There will be more very soon on Page Ranking, Linking and some things that you should NOT do on your website so check back soon to find out more.
Have a wonderful week,
Lola.
